A truly awe inspiring lawn demands proper lawn mowing techniques, occasional thatching, and aerating along with the right amount of fertilizer and preventive pest control.
Eaton landscaping services has the knowledge necessary to know when and how to use horticultural practices that will transform any lawn into a dense, vigorous turf; a lawn that your neighbor's will envy.
Lawn Mowing
Improper lawn mowing causes problems on lawns. In fact research shows improper mowing causes more damage than any other lawn maintenance practice. Most lawns are mowed too short, not often enough, and / or with a dull lawn mower blade.
Lawn Mowing Done Right
Eaton landscaping understands that lawn mowing height depends on the grass species. Kentucky bluegrass, or any lawn containing a mix Kentucky bluegrass, should be mowed at a lower set height; perennial rye grass and fine fescue should be mowed at a setting above the Bluegrass; tall fescue at the highest setting; and zoysia grass at about the lowest setting.
We at Eaton Horticultural Landscape know that lawn mowing below the optimum height restricts root growth and increases your lawns chances for damage due to insects, disease, lack of water, and foot traffic. Low lawn mower blade settings also favor a greater occurrence of weed infestations. Shaded areas should be mowed 0.5 to 1.0 inch higher than optimum.
Mowing Lawn Frequency
How often mowing is done, depends on how fast the grass is growing. We have found over the years that some lawns need mowing twice a week during spring or fall and, during hotter summer days, once every two (2) weeks.
We mow your lawn frequently enough so as not to remove more than 1/3 of the leaf blade during a single mowing. If the grass has grown too tall, we raise the mowing height and gradually lower it back to the original height over a few mowings.
We understand that mowing during midday when temperatures are above 90o and the soil is dry is to be avoided because it may damage the turf. If mowing must be done during a hot and dry period, we try to wait until temperatures moderate in the early morning or late evening.
Mower Clipping Removal
Clipping removal is not always recommended especially on certain turf grass areas. Though once thought, lawn clippings do not cause thatch. Furthermore, lawn mower clippings can recycle valuable nutrients and minerals into the soil thereby reducing fertilizer requirements..
We ensure that clippings are not harmful. Our lawn mowers spread the clippings evenly. Research shows side-discharge mowers when used on cool season turf grasses provide the best clipping disbursements.
For customers with lush irrigated lawns, Eaton Horticultural Landscaping uses state of the art hopper equipped mowers to collect unwanted grass clippings. The result is beautifully trimmed yards and garden areas, worthy of "Home & Garden" yard of the year award.
